Matthew 6:33 says ’Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing shall be added unto you”.
In a Kingdom, there is a King and a people. In this Kingdom of God, there is a King and a people whom He has given authority and power. The Kingdom of God is one that is filled with gifts and ministry offices, all working together to bring it to pass. This Kingdom is spiritual.
In recent times, life has become so fast-paced and extremely busy that everyone seems to be moving and working at a pace that strips them of personal time. Work, business, and career are taking so much time because there seems to be a lot to accomplish before time runs out. But the question is, Is there really time?.
The world system has defined time in such a way that it makes one forget the finer and important details and chase shadows in the name of survival. Chasing money, fame and fortune to meet daily needs.
This chase is called seeking. To seek means to continually search and decode until something breaks and questions are answered. The hunger is on the rise every day; the striving is on. The never-ending cycle of hullabaloo. Then, there are unseen but active laws that govern how society should be run.
What the Verse Means
Matthew 6:33 says ’Seek ye first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and every other thing shall be added unto you”.
- Put God First: Make God’s will for you and His kingdom your top priority
- Stop the worry: Focus on the greater outcome of any situation
- Live according to His Will: God’s plans for us are good and perfect for us
Other related scriptures about putting God first and trusting Him for daily needs include:
- Colossians 3:2: Telling believers to set their minds on things above, not on mundane things.
- Psalm 27:4: Expresses the desire to dwell in the house of the Lord and seek Him above all else.
- Psalm 37:4: Promises that delighting in the Lord will give you the desires of your heart.

- Philippians 4:6: Instructs people not to be anxious, but to present their requests to God through prayer
The Ultimate Pursuit
The pursuit of happiness is far-fetched, as the true definition of happiness differs from one person to another. For one, happiness is having all the good things that life can offer; for another, it’s the good things that money can offer. For some, it’s inner peace above all else. For another group, it’s the little things that make them happy. As believers, our happiness should come from knowing that the Kingdom of God is populated daily and darkness losses it shold over the souls of many.
As a matter of fact, to pursue the kingdom of God means to make His will, rule, and righteousness your highest daily priority rather than chasing worldly survival or anxiety. See, the downside to worldly pursuit is the anxiety of whom to marry, where to go, how to work, what career is best, how to talk, where to stay, and so on. If only the pursuit of the Kingdom of God in one’s life is greater than the pursuit of worldly happiness or gains.
“In him we live and move and have our being” is a famous Bible verse found in Acts 17:28. In this scripture, the Apostle Paul explains that God created the world, and human life depends entirely on God for existence, strength, and breath.
Challenges with seeking the Kingdom of God
- Time: We are too occupied with work and too many chores that we don’t even have time for ourselves.
- Career-drive: We are so preoccupied with driving our careers to the next level that we often forget the giver of all, causing a lack in spiritual growth and development.
- Pride: Emphasis on self-worth often blinds us from seeing what is right in front of us. The importance we place on our value diminishes the assignment God places in our hands.
