Mental Health in the Church

 

What is Mental health?

Mental health is the psychological state of a person in response to life, environment, and growth. Mental health can be described in diverse kinds of ways, according to the context at hand. Here, mental health in the church describes the stability of one’s mind in a Christian environment where different people from all walks of life worship.

Present-day mental health, however, is a topic for discussion in the church. Youth and adults struggle daily with responsibility, and society is battling Anxiety, depression, OCD, and PTSD caused by low self-esteem, pride, and degradation.

People come to church to meet with God, reconnect with their friends, and rejig for the week so some steam can be let off after facing a six-day marathon of emotional survival.

Anxiety

Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.. Phil 4:6. The Bible has stated with facts that Worry doesn’t bring anything good to the table. Instead, prayer and thanksgiving should motivate any action or decision, not anxiety.

This is a daily fear or worry that disrupts activities. It can be a result of many underlying factors. Some of which are; 

  • Constant worry
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Overthinking
  • Poor sleep
  • Poor focus
  • Muscle tension
  • Fatigue
  • Stomach Issues
  • Social withdrawal
  • Low self-esteem

 

Anxiety is a weapon of the devil to steal the joy of the child of Jesus, and the most potent tool against it is the Word of God, daily taken as a pill and medication to help build immunity against these signs. Don’t encourage anxiety.

 

Finding Help

Talk to someone: You shouldn’t have to bear burdensome emotions by yourself. 

Speak with a close friend, relative, or pastor.

Seek professional care: Consulting a Doctor or a licensed counselor can provide genuine, useful healing.

Get immediate help: call or send a message for help. We are available to support you if you feel overburdened or hopeless.

 

Depression

Psalm 34:18 says, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit”

This disorder is a mental health issue that arises from a series of effects ranging from emotional, physical, and cognitive decline. 

How to know if one is depressed
  • Loss of interest
  • Emotional changes
  • Mood swings
  • Focus and Indecision
  • Appetite and weight
  • Physical pain
  • Sadness

Comforting Verses for Depressing thoughts like Psalm 34:17-18, Matthew 11:28, Psalm 42:5, Isaiah 41:10, and Psalm 30:5 offer extra messages of rest, strength, and hope during difficult times. 

OCD – Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

      Like the depression , it is a disorder that compels one to have repetitive behavior patterns. Oftentimes, it comes from trauma, or circumstantial conditions in one’s life. Other times, it is impressed upon one’s life by the demons of destruction. This disorder disrupts one’s daily routine and makes it difficult to live with hence, causing depression, anger, isolation, instability, and failed relationships.

The two weapons of this disorder are; Thoughts and actions.

   Some research has defined it as an inherited disorder but the most important questio is, how far back does one inherit such an illness that messes with one’s life?. 

Symptoms of OCD

  • Obsessions
  • The need to be perfect
  • Short memory lapse
  • Impulsvensess
  • Repetition of behavioral patterns
  • Overthinking
  • Uncontrolled recurring thoughts

Similarities between depression,

      We struggle without thoughts, wondering if we did the right thing,spoke the right way, are in the right place at the right time but in all honesty, all we do is fill our minds with worry. Phil 4:6 says ‘Be anxious for nothing but by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving make your request known unto God’.

 

Some Verses That Helps You Guard Your Thoughts

  • Do not conform to the patterns of this world but be transformed by the renewing of the mind. Then you will be able to test and approve God’s Will – good and pleasing for your life. – Romans 12:2

 

  • Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.- Phillipians 4:8

 

  • Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in my sinful nature a slave to the law of sin.- Romans 7:25

 

The Word of God says; Guard your heart with all diligence for out of it comes the issues of life.
